Still Tales Or, Small Proposals for A Better Future
Collaboration with A FORSCHUNG
This small exhibition marks the first international exhibition of the photographic work of Matilde Travassos and the first anniversary of A FORSCHUNG.
Both the photographs and the architecture projects presented in this small exhibition are rooted in a delayed but strong awareness of the great power contained in trivial decisions, in the constant, in the quotidian. Though the photographs were produced after the architecture projects, they are not an illustration of the projects themselves, rather of the conditions from which the projects emerge.
These images intend to tell stories that recall relations of proximity, of primordial, frugal pleasures and needs, of familiarity and of the sublime in every culture. The lives they speak of are detached from the immediacy of monetary value and of implicit consumption even if for the briefest of moments. They push reality away in order to be able to look back at it with a critical gaze. The potential of places to be stages for friendship, for play, for festivity, for civility and collaboration is celebrated in each shot of the camera, each stroke of the digital pincel, each line stretched over the scaleless black background.
Transversal to these works is the will to highlight the given fact that each proposal put forth, regardless of its dimension, should have a positive, productive impact on the condition it engages with, from a building to the framing of a question in a still or the promotion of the gathering of a group of people around photography, architecture, drinks and bread.
