This work was carried out in the scope of the artists residence at the Pico do Refúgio with António Júlio Duarte.
This residence marked my first visit to the Azores Islands. Lost in the middle of the ocean, the archipelago has been romanticized over the years by those who pass by, and the wild innocence of the islands has been gradually lost, opening the doors to the influence of the contemporary.
I went there loaded with many pre-defined ideas, pre-constructed myths regarding the islands and a strong will to confront these ill-informed perceptions with reality. Soon enough I realised that the time I had was too short for studying and exploring every corner of the islands to the extent I felt necessary. Faced with this fact, I decided to build upon the moments and situations I could duly experience, manipulating the places and symbols of Saint Michael, mixing them with the notions I had carried onto the island, in order to create my own reality.
This project offers a vision of who has not had time to observe everything she wanted but who takes home key ideas hanging in the most sought-after attractions of San Miguel. Here is an unfair brochure, far from a real portrait.
